Do you have a piece of choreography on aerial hoop, dance trapeze, or static trapeze, but no music to go along with it? Or do you have a piece of music that you’d like to work with, but no choreography yet? Or do you have both a piece of choreography and a piece of music, but you aren’t sure how to put them together? OR do you have a fully choreographed act to a piece of music, and you would like to work on integrating the nuances of the music more into your moves, transitions, styles, and gestures? If any of these describe your current choreography situation, then this workshop is for you!
Eliana is both a musician and an aerial performer, and she therefore has an innate awareness of how to use music to define movement. She will work with each student individually to tailor her/his choreography to her/his chosen music. Students will also observe, learn, and experiment with one another's choreographies and styles of movement, and they will be encouraged to provide peer feedback.
Please note the following three conditions: 1) This workshop is open to students of all skill levels. However, if you are an absolute beginner and do not yet have a piece of choreography, a knowledge of at least 15 moves on your chosen apparatus is required. 2) Since Eliana will work with each student one-on-one, she asks that you please write her a personal email no less than one week before the workshop. In this email you should include: - An introduction to yourself (your apparatus, how many years of experience you have on this apparatus, your skill level, any other previous experience in circus/dance/music, any injuries or limitations, etc.) - Your current choreography situation: what you would like to work on - A video of your choreography, if applicable - Your chosen music, if applicable (as an attachment or as a URL link)

About the teacher: Eliana was born and raised on North America's West Coast. She began exercising her physical creativity as a child through recreational gymnastics. At the age of 13, she made the smooth transition to circus by joining a youth performance troupe, where she developed an aptitude for bar-based aerials. She continued her professional training in the USA, Canada, and Denmark. Since 2012, Eliana has been performing as an independent aerialist in Vancouver, Canada, including with the internationally renowned company The Underground Circus. Eliana also has more than eight years of experience coaching aerial hoop and trapeze. Until her move away from Vancouver in 2018, she held the position of Head Hoop and Trapeze Coach at CircusWest Performing Arts Society. Now in 2018-2019, Eliana is wandering through Europe with a work visa in hand, attending prestigious artist and circus residencies in Finland, Germany, and Canada (including Femme du Feu’s Circus Sessions), launching new artistic projects and musical collaborations, and teaching circus wherever she goes. In addition to a circus artist, Eliana is also a visual artist and a classically-trained singer. She holds a BA in Visual Arts (with a focus in printmaking) and Indigenous and Western Art History from the University of British Columbia, and she has launched genre-fusing collaborative music projects in Vancouver and in Berlin. Eliana is a 2018 recipient of the BC Arts Council’s Early Career Development Program Award. Please visit www.eliana-sofia.com for more information, images, and footage.
